(Opening scene) "In the 21st
century, great corporations will
bestride the earth, replacing nations as
the true creators of history, amassing
powerful private armies to do their
bidding." Sounds like some one
badly needs a lesson in history. Since
the day that war has had profit
potential, people have banded together
to reap the rewards. Even before their
inception, corporations could be
construed as any incorporated group of
investors seeking profit. Since their
legal inception, corporations have
walked hand in hand with nation states.
So the idea that corporations replace
"nations as the true creators of
history" is bogus. GE, Honeywell,
DuPont and others are fundamentally
intertwined with America. They are
owned and directed by the people, and it
would seem then that they play the role
of "true creators" (whatever
that means) just as much as nations.
The notion pandered by this film is that
corporations are autonomous entities not
subject to international law, evading
justice by hoodwinking the people.
While there may be exceptional cases
that make this seem like reality, taking
this position turns the exceptions into
the rule. In conclusion, clearly John
Cusack is an idiot.
